The age they lived in

He came from a poor family that kept a china shop, never attended ordinary school, and entered the Paris Conservatoire at ten, staying eleven years — regularly marked down for breaking the rules of harmony. Asked which rule he followed, he is said to have answered: my own pleasure. He spent summers teaching piano in the household of Nadezhda von Meck, Tchaikovsky’s patron, hearing Russian music there and taking a deep mark from Mussorgsky. His private life was chaotic: two women he left each shot themselves in the chest and survived, and several friends in Parisian music broke with him. He died of cancer in 1918 while Paris was under German bombardment.

In their words — and in plain words

Beside Javanese music, our tonic and dominant look like hollow ghosts." — letter to a friend, 1895
Written after hearing gamelan at the Javanese pavilion of the 1889 Paris exposition. What struck him was not exotic colour. Western music runs on a promise: tension will be resolved. An unstable chord makes you expect a stable one, and that expectation pulls the piece forward. It has a destination. Gamelan does not. A great gong marks a cycle and layers turn inside it at their own speeds; it ends because it stops, not because it arrives. Here he saw the possibility that music need not be going anywhere at all. The meeting should not be told only as a happy one. That exposition displayed a reconstructed Javanese village with real people in it, and the names of the musicians were not recorded.

A philosophy made by a life

He is called the representative of musical impressionism and disliked the label, saying more than once that he resented a painting term being fastened onto music. What he actually did was loosen the rules of harmony: creating tension and leaving it, or setting side by side chords that need no resolution. He was fond of the whole-tone scale, which has no semitones, and of five-note scales — and without semitones the sense of having to go somewhere disappears. So his music does not travel; it stays. The discovery opened the twentieth century. After him Schoenberg removed the home note altogether, and jazz and film music took a great deal from his harmony. He learned from a sound outside the West, and that learning happened on unequal terms. Serious learning and unequal extraction can both be true. The question he leaves is how to say both at once.

The questions they asked

Must music be going somewhere?
Where is the line between learning from another’s music and taking it?
When the rules loosen, does art become free?
If a thing is only good when it arrives somewhere — then what is staying?
