He returned humanity to nature — a process without purpose made the eye

The age they lived in

Victorian Britain, ruled by natural theology: the watch-like precision of living structures proved a Designer. A failed medical student headed for the clergy, the 22-year-old Darwin sailed on the Beagle as unpaid naturalist for five years (1831–36). Galápagos finches and South American fossils planted his questions — yet he delayed publication for over twenty years, knowing what his theory would topple. It felt, he wrote to a friend, “like confessing a murder.”

In their words — and in plain words

There is grandeur in this view of life... from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved." — the closing of On the Origin of Species
Natural selection is astonishingly simple in structure: organisms are born slightly different (variation); some differences pass to offspring (heredity); more are born than can survive (overproduction). Given only these, individuals slightly better matched to their environment leave more descendants, repeated countless times until forms change. No designer, no goal is required — even an organ as precise as the eye can accumulate from a purposeless process. And having written that conclusion, the word he chose at the end was “grandeur.” This paragraph shows how wonder need not be forfeited in a nature without gods.

A philosophy made by a life

Twenty years of silence ended with a letter: in 1858 Alfred Russel Wallace sent, from the Malay Archipelago, a manuscript containing nearly the same theory. Friends arranged for both papers to be read the same day, and Darwin rushed the Origin out the next year — one of the rare priority disputes in science that ended in gentlemanly fashion. His real weapon was not brilliance but doggedness: eight years devoted to classifying barnacles (his children reportedly asked where other fathers did their barnacles), pigeons bred in his own yard, and forty years watching earthworms make soil, published as his last book. He also wrote a chapter cataloguing his theory’s weaknesses before critics could — an Aquinas-like honesty. His impact on thought is double. First, humanity stepped down from creation’s special seat to become one branch of life — why Freud counted Copernicus, Darwin, and himself as the three blows to human pride. Second, precision without purpose: the teleology that had explained nature since Aristotle collapsed. Misuse began at once: social Darwinism, grafting “survival of the fittest” onto society, became the alibi of imperialism, racism, and eugenics — though Darwin himself, raised among abolitionists, loathed slavery and argued for humanity’s unity. Deriving ought from is (nature is thus, so society must be) is a logical fallacy, and the history of that misuse is itself a philosophical question about science and ethics. He lies in Westminster Abbey, beside Newton.

The questions they asked

Can a process without purpose produce precision?
Is humanity nature’s exception — or part of it?
Does “nature is so” imply “society ought to be so”?
A world arisen with no designer and no goal — does that fact rob you of wonder, or remain, as for Darwin, “grandeur”?
