The age they lived in

The Spanish empire was cresting and cracking: the Armada lost in 1588, American silver driving inflation. Chivalry had been dead three centuries; what remained were chivalric romances on booksellers' shelves. Cervantes lost the use of his left hand at Lepanto, spent five years captive in Algiers, and was jailed over accounts as a tax collector. Part One appeared when he was fifty-eight.

In their words — and in plain words

He sees the world not as it is, but as it ought to be." — the common formulation of Don Quixote
An old man who has read too many chivalric romances and believes he is a knight — windmills as giants, an inn as a castle, a beating every time. It is funny. Then the direction of the laughter turns: the people mocking him also live by honour, blood and reputation, none of which exist either. He knows what he believes in; they do not. That is why this is called the first modern novel — it makes the multiplicity of viewpoints into the structure of the story itself.

A philosophy made by a life

In Part Two something remarkable happens: Quixote and Sancho meet people who have read Part One, and even a spurious sequel by another author enters the book. Characters read about themselves and react — what Pirandello would do on stage three centuries later, Cervantes did first in prose. At the end Quixote recovers his sanity, renounces the romances, and dies. Sancho begs him in tears to ride out again and he refuses. Most readers find the ending sad: sanity arrives as a loss rather than a cure.

The questions they asked

Who is saner — the one who knows what they believe, or the one who does not?
Giving up the ideal and returning to sanity — a cure, or a loss?
What changes when a story puts itself inside itself?
What windmill are you charging? And if you learned it was not a giant, what else would you have to put down?
