Western Philosophy
Paris
Philosopher of "nevertheless" — how to live in revolt against an absurd world

The age they lived in

A European slum in Algiers: raised by an illiterate mother and a deaf grandmother, his father swallowed by WWI the year after his birth. Poverty, Mediterranean sun, football (he kept goal), and a tuberculosis sentence at seventeen — a youth who met death early felt life the more fiercely. In occupied Paris he edited the Resistance paper Combat while publishing The Stranger and The Myth of Sisyphus: the philosophy of the absurd, born at the world's most absurd hour.

In their words — and in plain words

The struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy." — the last lines of The Myth of Sisyphus
Sisyphus, condemned to roll his boulder up forever only to watch it fall — the emblem of meaningless labor. Camus fixes on the walk back down: the moment Sisyphus faces his sentence clear-eyed and embraces the rock as his own, punishment becomes revolt. From the fact that life carries no pre-given meaning (the absurd), neither despair (suicide) nor false comfort (blind belief), but a third way: eyes open, in revolt, living anyway.

A philosophy made by a life

Meursault in The Stranger is condemned less for his murder than for not weeping at his mother's funeral — an experiment in how the world disposes of a man who refuses to perform required feeling. But to read Camus as a nihilist is to read him backwards: his thought moves in two acts, from absurdity to revolt. Facing the real absurdity of occupation he fought in an underground newsroom, and The Plague (1947) is that experience as parable — Dr. Rieux, in a sealed city, invokes neither God's will nor history's laws; he simply treats the sick. Not surrendering though you cannot win, and revolting together rather than alone: "I revolt, therefore we are" is his cogito. Here he broke with Sartre — when The Rebel (1951) condemned revolutionary violence that lets ends justify means (the USSR of the day), Sartre's circle publicly excommunicated him; in Cold-War Paris, criticizing Stalin read as turning right. He accepted the isolation. On Algeria, refusing terror against civilians from both sides made him a traitor to both — "I believe in justice, but I will defend my mother before justice" compresses the anguish. Accepting the 1957 Nobel at 44, he all but dedicated it in a letter to his primary-school teacher. Three years later, riding to Paris in his publisher's car, he died against a plane tree — an unused train ticket in his pocket. An absurd death for the lifelong thinker of absurdity. But the sentence remains: the world's meaninglessness is not a reason for despair, but the reason humans must become meaning for one another.

The questions they asked

If life has no given meaning, why go on living?
Is it folly to keep fighting an unwinnable fight?
Can ends justify means?
What is your boulder — and on the walk back down the mountain, could you be Sisyphus, happy?
