Religious Thought
전통설 BC 563 ~ BC 483 (근래 학설은 약 1세기 늦춤)Traditionally 563–483 BC (recent scholarship dates him later) · 사르나트(첫 설법지)Sarnath, site of the first sermon
A prince who left the throne to dissect the structure of suffering

The age they lived in

The Ganges plain was booming with cities, coins, and kingdoms; old tribal orders dissolved, and wandering ascetics challenged the Vedic priesthood. Prince Siddhārtha joined them — but unlike others, he tested both extreme austerity and palace pleasure, and discarded both. The Middle Way was not a doctrine but an experimental result.

In their words — and in plain words

Birth is suffering, aging is suffering, sickness is suffering, death is suffering... This is the noble truth of suffering." — First Sermon at Sarnath
Not pessimism — a medical chart. The Four Noble Truths follow the clinical format of ancient Indian medicine: symptom, cause, prognosis, prescription. The Buddha explains why life disobeys us not by the will of gods but by the mechanics of mind — closer to the first psychologist than to a prophet.

A philosophy made by a life

Tradition compresses his departure into four sights: an old man, a sick man, a corpse — and a wanderer. Three problems and one hypothesis. After six years of austerity left him skeletal, he accepted a bowl of milk-rice and abandoned asceticism; his five companions left in disgust. They were the first he sought after awakening — the first sermon, at this spot in Sarnath. For 45 years he walked the Ganges basin teaching kings and outcasts alike; a sangha blind to caste was itself a social experiment. He died at 80, on the road, of a blacksmith's offering. His last words: "All things pass. Strive on, diligently." A teacher to the end — never a god.

The questions they asked

Where does suffering come from?
Is the self a thing — or a process?
Is life without craving possible — or even desirable?
The thing that torments you most — is the pain in the situation, or in the grip of your mind upon it?
