The age they lived in

Born poor in Hamburg. His father played in taverns, and the story long went that the boy earned money playing piano in dockside bars — though it is now thought he largely invented that himself. Meeting the Schumanns at twenty settled his life: Schumann announced him in print as the saviour of the age, and two years later collapsed into mental illness and died in an asylum. Brahms looked after Clara Schumann and her seven children, and the bond lasted the rest of his life. He never married and died the year after she did; much of their correspondence they agreed to destroy. He was gruff and severely self-critical, in the habit of burning manuscripts he disliked.

In their words — and in plain words

You have no idea what it is like to hear the footsteps of a giant behind you." — reported to the conductor Hermann Levi
The giant is Beethoven. After Schumann declared him the saviour of the age at twenty, people waited for his first symphony. He made them wait twenty-one years, producing it at forty-three after starting and abandoning it repeatedly. The sentence is about the weight of influence. When the one before you is too large, whoever follows either imitates or freezes. Brahms spent twenty-one years looking for a third road. When the work came, the conductor Bülow called it Beethoven’s Tenth. Told that the finale’s theme resembles the Ode to Joy, Brahms replied curtly that any fool could see that — meaning it was not imitation but an answer made knowingly.

A philosophy made by a life

The nineteenth century split in two. On one side Liszt and Wagner, holding that music should carry poetic content; on the other Brahms and the critic Hanslick, answering that music is nothing but the movement of tones. That is why his symphonies have no names — just no. 1, no. 2, never Fantastic or Eroica. He would not tell you in advance what to imagine. The factional quarrel left him with a reputation for severity that misleads. He wrote the Lullaby, and his Hungarian Dances, arranged from tunes heard from Romani bands, were his best-selling music. In A German Requiem, completed after his mother’s death, he chose German scripture himself instead of the Latin liturgy, and made the subject not the judgement of the dead but the comfort of those left behind. And he discovered the unknown Dvořák, struck by his scores while judging a state stipend and introducing him to his own publisher. They remained friends for life.
