Physics concerns not nature itself, but what we can say about nature
The age they lived in
In the 1920s Copenhagen was the capital of quantum mechanics. Through Bohr’s institute passed Heisenberg, Pauli, Dirac — men in their twenties — and there the interpretation was worked out: the mathematics was right, but what did it mean? No definite position before measurement; how you ask determines what answers are possible. Einstein set himself against this picture, and their argument ran for over twenty years.
In their words — and in plain words
There is no quantum world. There is only an abstract quantum physical description. It is wrong to think that the task of physics is to find out how nature is. Physics concerns what we can say about nature." — as recalled by his student Aage Petersen
It sounds shocking but it is not a manifesto of anti-realism. The point: we meet nature only through language and apparatus, so the sentences of physics cannot take the form "nature is thus" — only "under these experimental conditions, this is observed." Which is why he stands beside the question "Can words hold truth?" in this atlas: where Wittgenstein found the limits of language, Bohr met the same wall inside the language of physics. One caveat is owed — the sentence survives in a student’s recollection, not in Bohr’s own writing.
Contraria sunt complementa — opposites are complementary." — the motto he chose for his coat of arms in 1947, drawn above a taijitu
Light sometimes behaves as a wave, sometimes as grains. The two pictures look contradictory, yet neither alone can state the whole phenomenon — this is his complementarity. Which face shows depends on which experiment you run, and no experiment shows both. That he chose the taijitu for his coat of arms is fact: in East Asian yin-yang — opposed and mutually constituting — he recognised a picture of his own concept. But this is analogy, not lineage. Complementarity was not derived from Laozi; it came out of the laboratory, and Bohr recognised the resemblance afterwards.
A philosophy made by a life
The 1913 atomic model made his name and the 1922 Nobel confirmed it, but what he left physics was larger: an institute and an argument. His Copenhagen institute schooled a generation, and the argument with Einstein was its textbook. From Solvay 1927 to the 1935 reply to EPR he refused to dodge a single thought experiment, answering each in turn — his 1935 response even bears, word for word, the same title as the Einstein paper: "Can Quantum-Mechanical Description of Physical Reality Be Considered Complete?" The same question, with the opposite answer. When the war came he escaped occupied Denmark — with a Jewish mother he was on the arrest lists — worked on the Manhattan Project, and afterwards wrote open letters to governments arguing for international control of the bomb: the man who opened the atom kept asking where the door led. His grave in Copenhagen carries no title — not the physicist Niels Bohr, just Niels Bohr.

Does physics deal with nature itself, or with what we can say about nature?
If two contradictory pictures are both needed, where does the contradiction live?
If how we ask fixes what can be answered, what is the world before the question?
Is there something you are failing to say because the words you use cannot hold it?
