The age they lived in
His father tried to make him a second Mozart, and is recorded waking the sleeping boy after a night of drinking to put him at the keyboard; he also shaved two years off his son’s age to present him as a prodigy. From about twenty-eight he began to hear noises in his ears, and at thirty-two he wrote a testament to his brothers at Heiligenstadt. The years that followed were his most productive — symphonies three through eight, the Waldstein and Appassionata sonatas. At the end, entirely deaf, he conversed on paper; his secretary Schindler was later found to have forged and destroyed much of those conversation books. Many of the anecdotes we repeat come from that man, and are not trusted.
In their words — and in plain words
It was only my art that held me back. It seemed impossible to leave the world until I had brought forth all that I felt was within me." — the Heiligenstadt Testament, 1802
The worst thing that can happen to a musician happened to him. At thirty-two he wrote this to his brothers, never sent it, and left it in a drawer. It was found after his death.
What held him back was neither hope nor faith but the works still unwritten. Not being able to go until what is inside has been brought out — that drove the remaining twenty-five years.
And he did keep writing. After his ears closed he composed from memory and calculation, much as a writer knows the rhythm of a sentence without reading it aloud. There was a cost: his vocal writing from this period is punishing to sing, because he could no longer check by ear what a throat can take.
A philosophy made by a life
In Korea and Japan he is titled with the character for sage. The West has no equivalent. But the reason is clear enough: he changed the standing of the musician.
Before him a composer made what was ordered. He wrote without a commission and sold it when it was done, and told a patron that there are thousands of princes and only one Beethoven. In an age when rank was cracking, that is among the first claims by an artist to stand level with the nobility.
Musically, what he did comes to one thing: driving a small cell all the way into a large structure. The Fifth Symphony opens with four notes, and that fragment generates a forty-minute work. Less material, further reach — demonstrated in the flesh.
It is also said the narrative of the saint who came through affliction hides the person. He was difficult, moved lodgings dozens of times, fought a years-long custody suit against his sister-in-law over his nephew Karl — and the boy later attempted suicide.
