The age they lived in

He lost his mother at nine and his father at ten and was raised by an elder brother. At about twenty he walked 400 km to hear Buxtehude, took four weeks’ leave, returned after four months and was reprimanded; at twenty-nine he was jailed for four weeks for too stubbornly demanding release from a court post. He was the third choice for the cantorate at St Thomas in Leipzig, after Telemann and Graupner declined — a councillor is recorded saying that since the best could not be had, they would settle for a mediocrity. The mediocrity held the post for twenty-seven years, delivering a cantata most weeks. He married twice, had twenty children and buried half of them young, and was better known in his lifetime as an organist.

In their words — and in plain words

For the profit of young musicians eager to learn, and the pleasure of those already skilled" — title page of The Well-Tempered Clavier
A prelude and fugue in every one of the twenty-four keys, made to demonstrate in the flesh that all of them are usable. Why did that need proving? Stack the fifth twelve times and you do not land where you began — the small gap Pythagoras left. Older tunings dumped it in one place, making the keys near it unusable. Spread it thinly and no key is perfectly pure, but none is unusable. After this collection composers could move freely between keys. Usable everywhere instead of perfect somewhere — whether that is compromise or invention is still worth asking.

A philosophy made by a life

Calling him the father of music is a Korean and Japanese habit; the West does not use the title. But what it points at is accurate. He absorbed the Italian concerto, the French dance suite and German counterpoint into one body of work, and that work became the textbook for everyone after him — Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin all learned from The Well-Tempered Clavier. And by his death he was considered old-fashioned. In 1737 a critic publicly called his music turgid and confused, and taste had moved to the lighter, clearer style of his sons’ generation. In the later eighteenth century, Bach meant his son Carl Philipp Emanuel. The revival came in 1829, when the twenty-year-old Mendelssohn conducted the St Matthew Passion in Berlin — seventy-nine years after his death. What he had made one at a time while nobody watched opened eighty years later.
