He kept Aristotle alive while Europe forgot — and imagined the Floating Man

The age they lived in

Central Asia in the Islamic Golden Age. While Europe lost most Greek originals, the Islamic world — Baghdad's House of Wisdom and beyond — translated and annotated Aristotle, Plato, and Galen, becoming custodian of that inheritance. In Bukhara, a tax official's prodigy son claimed in his autobiography to have mastered all the sciences by eighteen; for curing the emir, the fee he asked was not gold but access to the royal library.

In their words — and in plain words

— 『치유의 서』, "공중에 뜬 인간" 사고실험 (요지)"Imagine a man created floating in air, limbs apart, touching nothing, perceiving nothing — he would still affirm, without doubt, that he exists." — the Floating Man, from The Book of Healing
Switch off every sense, and one thing stays lit: the awareness that I am. The self, then, is not built from bodily sensation but prior to it. Six centuries before Descartes' cogito — but with a different aim: Descartes sought a foundation for certain knowledge; Ibn Sina sought to show the soul is distinct from the body. Same experiment, different question.

A philosophy made by a life

His life was nothing like a scholar's study: he wandered collapsing dynasties across Persia and Central Asia — vizier, then prisoner, then fugitive in disguise — physician and administrator by day. Philosophy was night work, written over readings and wine with students. The results: The Book of Healing, a philosophical encyclopedia, and The Canon of Medicine, Europe's medical textbook for six hundred years — its author never set foot in Europe. The Aristotle he preserved passed through Ibn Rushd to Aquinas in Paris and ignited scholasticism: why this blue dot belongs in Bukhara. His ontology — the Necessary Existent versus contingent beings — became shared grammar for Islamic, Jewish, and Christian theology alike.

The questions they asked

Does the self exist without the body's senses?
Who guarded knowledge — and what do civilizations owe each other?
Why do things exist — by necessity, or contingency?
Erase every sense, memory, and possession — what remains of "you"?
