Western Philosophy
Truth does not contradict truth" — the judge who engineered peace between faith and reason

The age they lived in

Córdoba in Islamic Spain — once Europe's greatest city of books, now squeezed between the Christian reconquest and the fundamentalist Almohads. From a family of chief judges, himself a judge and court physician, he worked after al-Ghazali's verdict that philosophy sickens faith — under a caliph's discreet commission: comment on all of Aristotle.

In their words — and in plain words

— 『결정적 논고』 (요지)"Philosophy is the companion and milk-sister of religion; truth does not oppose truth but accords with it and bears witness to it." — The Decisive Treatise
If God made the world and also gave us reason, then reason's reading of the world cannot truly collide with revelation; apparent conflict is a signal to interpret scripture rather than take it literally. And — ever the jurist — he argued philosophy is not merely permitted but obligatory: since the Qur'an commands reflection, those capable of demonstration are religiously bound to philosophize.

A philosophy made by a life

To al-Ghazali's Incoherence of the Philosophers he replied with The Incoherence of the Incoherence — a declaration of war in a title. But his real legacy is the triple-layered commentary on all of Aristotle, so standard that Latin Europe needed no name: if Aristotle was "the Philosopher," he was simply "the Commentator." Then the irony: late in life the political wind turned — tried for heresy, banished, his books burned; the rationalist line withered in Islam. At that very moment his commentaries crossed the Pyrenees in Latin and Hebrew. Paris rediscovered Aristotle through him; Aquinas built scholasticism arguing with him lifelong; Dante seated him among the sages of Limbo, not hell. A flame extinguished in its own civilization became the dawn of its neighbor's — his fate itself testifies that knowledge has no borders.

The questions they asked

Do faith and reason truly conflict?
Should scripture be read literally — or interpreted?
When one civilization discards an idea and another revives it — whose idea is it?
When what you believe collides with what you have reasoned out — which one do you go back and reread?
