Religious Thought
He philosophized by confessing — the first explorer of the inner self
The age they lived in
Rome was collapsing; the year he died, Vandals besieged his own city. A provincial striver who sold rhetoric, spent nine years in Manichaeism, fathered a son, and prayed "grant me chastity — but not yet," he turned that whole wandering into his material. When "eternal" Rome was sacked in 410 and everyone asked whether Christianity was to blame, his answer became The City of God.
In their words — and in plain words
What then is time? If no one asks me, I know; if I wish to explain it to one who asks, I do not know." — Confessions XI
The strange experience everyone has, named precisely for the first time: the better we know something, the harder it is to explain. His answer — past and future do not exist, and the present has no width, so time lives inside the mind as memory, attention, and expectation — would be taken up again by phenomenology 1,500 years later.
A philosophy made by a life
The Confessions is the first inner autobiography — a record not of deeds but of desire, deceit, and remorse. The famous pear theft shows the method: as a boy he robbed a pear tree not for hunger but for the thrill of theft itself, and he dissects this petty sin for pages. Why do humans want evil knowing it is evil? Socrates' optimism — that knowledge suffices for virtue — breaks here: the discovery of the divided will. Converted in a Milan garden at 32 by a child's chant of "take up and read," he returned to Africa and spent 34 years as bishop of a port city, buried in refugees and disputes — philosophy written from the middle of a collapsing world, not a study.
