Western Philosophy
BC 384 ~ BC 322384 – 322 BC · 아테네(리케이온)Athens, the Lyceum
The walking teacher of all sciences — he loved his master, but truth more

The age they lived in

Macedon was swallowing Greece. A royal physician’s son, he came to Athens at 17 and spent twenty years in Plato’s Academy — the student his teacher reportedly called “the mind of the school.” Passed over as successor (he was a foreigner), he tutored Alexander the Great, then returned to found his own school, the Lyceum, teaching while strolling its walkways — hence the “Peripatetics,” the walkers.

In their words — and in plain words

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit." — a later summary of the Nicomachean Ethics
A good person is neither born nor argued into being — but built, by repeating good actions until they become second nature. Courage grows only by acting bravely, honesty by being honest; virtue, like swimming, cannot be learned from a book. His “mean” works the same way: courage is not the arithmetic average of rashness and cowardice, but a trained sense for what each situation calls for.

A philosophy made by a life

Where Plato pointed to the heaven of Forms, Aristotle pointed to the ground: truth lives in the particular things before our eyes — the two gestures Raphael painted in The School of Athens. “Dear is my teacher, but dearer still is truth” was not betrayal but the completion of what the teacher taught. In that spirit he investigated everything: invented logic, collected the constitutions of 158 city-states, dissected sea urchins and octopuses in a Lesbos lagoon — Darwin called his own masters “mere schoolboys to old Aristotle.” The very map of the disciplines — biology, physics, ethics, politics, poetics — is his legacy; this atlas’s color legend is a distant descendant. When Alexander died and Athens turned anti-Macedonian, he was charged with impiety like Socrates — and left, saying he would not let Athens sin twice against philosophy. His will survives: it frees his slaves — the last document of a man who had argued slavery natural. That contradiction, too, is Aristotle the human being.

The questions they asked

Is excellence innate — or built by habit?
Does truth live in ideals beyond — or in things before us?
What is the good life — eudaimonia?
The things you repeat every day — what kind of person are they building?
The questions this person stands under
