Religious Thought
AD 1225 ~ 1274AD 1225 – 1274 · 파리(파리 대학)Paris, University of Paris
He built the cathedral of faith and reason — then called it straw
The age they lived in
Thirteenth-century Paris, Europe's intellectual capital: the new institution called the university at its height, and the full Aristotle — arriving with Ibn Rushd's commentaries — causing an earthquake. What to do with a pagan who explained the world coherently without God? The Church banned the lectures; students read him anyway. Aquinas chose neither prohibition nor surrender but a third way: straight through, to synthesis — with half his toolbox borrowed from Muslim and Jewish philosophers.
In their words — and in plain words
Grace does not destroy nature, but perfects it." — Summa Theologiae I
His one-line verdict on the 700-year quarrel: what reason can know and what only revelation can know are different floors, not enemies — and the upper floor completes rather than crushes the lower. Faith that fears science is, by his standard, unfinished faith; reason that mocks faith forgets its own limits. The sentence became the constitution of Catholic intellectual tradition.
A philosophy made by a life
Youngest son of an Italian count, he kicked away the family plan (abbot of a prestigious abbey) for the upstart Dominicans — his enraged brothers kidnapped and imprisoned him in the family castle for over a year, in vain. Nicknamed "the dumb ox" in Paris for his bulk and silence, he drew his teacher Albert's prophecy: this ox's bellow will fill the world. The Summa Theologiae is an edifice of thousands of questions, each opening with the objections stated at full strength before the answer — his method was to wrestle the opponent's best argument, not censor it (the strongest medieval statements of the case for atheism are his own summaries). Then the unexpected ending: on 6 December 1273, something happened to him during Mass, and he stopped writing entirely. To his secretary he said only: "Compared with what I have seen, everything I have written seems like straw." The Summa remains unfinished; he died months later. The man who built reason's cathedral confessed, at the end, reason's limit — and that unfinishedness, too, is his philosophy.
The questions they asked
Can God's existence be proven?
Why does it matter to state your opponent's case at its strongest?
Where does reason's reach end?
Could you argue the position you oppose better than its own defenders — and have you ever tried?
