The first time doubt became a method — authority placed on the workbench

The age they lived in

Tenth-century Cairo and Baghdad were assembling everything humanity knew: Greek, Sanskrit and Persian texts rendered into Arabic, with Ptolemy’s astronomy and optics at the summit of that effort. The problem came after the translating — how do you check what you have gathered? Al-Haytham had promised to control the Nile floods, failed, and drew the caliph’s anger; tradition says he feigned madness and spent years confined. The Book of Optics was written in that confinement.

In their words — and in plain words

The seeker after truth is not one who believes the ancients, but one who doubts them and questions what they hold. … He must attack what he reads from every side, and suspect himself as well." — Doubts Concerning Ptolemy
The way to respect an authority, it turns out, is to attack it. He did not dismiss Ptolemy — he treated him more seriously than anyone had in a thousand years, by computing where he might be wrong. The last clause is the decisive one: doubting others is only half of it; doubt becomes a method only when you are inside its range.
Light does not go out from the eye; it comes from the object into the eye." — the conclusion the Book of Optics reached by experiment
From Euclid to Ptolemy the settled view, for over a thousand years, was that rays leave the eye. Al-Haytham did not win the argument by arguing. He bored a hole in a darkened room and showed the outside scene forming upside down, and pointed to the ache in the eye after looking at something bright — if the eye emitted light, why would the eye be hurt? What matters is not the conclusion but the mode of judgement: not who is the greater man, but which account survives the test. That procedure later acquired the name science.

A philosophy made by a life

The seven books of the Optics are about light and, at the same time, about method. To each claim he attached a procedure — here is the apparatus, here is what we vary, here is what results — and many historians locate the ancestor of the modern methods section right here. His darkened chamber became, in Latin, the camera obscura, and the name is still in the machine in your pocket. Translated into Latin late in the twelfth century, the book reached Roger Bacon and Kepler, whose own optics begins where al-Haytham left off: five centuries before the European scientific revolution, the method was already at work in a locked room in Cairo. One more thing deserves notice. He left his own conclusions provisional, writing at the end of the Doubts that he had not built a finished system to replace Ptolemy’s. That is not an admission of failure but a declaration that procedure comes before answers — issuing a conclusion in a state where it can still be shown wrong. A thousand years later Popper would call that the condition of science.

The questions they asked

How do we find out whether an authoritative book is wrong?
Does doubt include the doubter?
What settles a dispute that argument cannot?
What have you held true without ever testing it — and is there a way to test it?
